“Ex-Brazil President Bolsonaro Starts 27-Year Term”

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro commenced his 27-year prison term on Tuesday for orchestrating a coup in an attempt to retain power after losing the 2022 presidential election. This development, which many in Brazil had doubted, saw Justice Alexandre de Moraes order Bolsonaro’s confinement at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia. Bolsonaro had been held there since Saturday after authorities reported that he had tampered with his ankle monitor using a soldering iron.

During his imprisonment, Bolsonaro will have no contact with the other inmates at the facility. His room, measuring 12 square meters, is equipped with essential amenities such as a bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a TV, and a desk, as disclosed by federal police sources. While Brazilian law could have allowed for his transfer to a local prison or a military facility in Brasilia, Bolsonaro remains detained at the federal police headquarters.

Accused of conspiring to overthrow Brazil’s democratic system following his electoral defeat in 2022, Bolsonaro and several of his supporters were convicted by the Supreme Court. The coup plot allegedly involved plans to eliminate President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice de Moraes, alongside inciting insurrection in early 2023. Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading an armed criminal group and attempting to violently subvert the democratic order.

Despite his protests of innocence, Bolsonaro’s legal options were exhausted as the country’s top court finalized the guilty verdict, dismissing his appeal this month. Bolsonaro remains a prominent political figure in Brazil, although he is barred from running for office until at least 2030 following a separate ruling by the electoral court. He retains significant support, evident in polls suggesting his competitiveness in future elections if permitted to run.

Known for his ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who denounced the trial as a “witch hunt,” Bolsonaro faced increased scrutiny leading to a U.S. order imposing 50% tariffs on certain Brazilian exports. Prior to his recent detention, Bolsonaro had been under house arrest in Brasilia for over 100 days in connection with allegations that he sought Trump’s intervention to evade prosecution. Subsequent developments saw improved relations between Brazil and the U.S., culminating in meetings between Lula and Trump at the ASEAN summit in Malaysia, resulting in the reduction of elevated tariffs.

Overall, Bolsonaro’s incarceration marks a significant moment in Brazilian politics, underscoring the ongoing legal challenges and political dynamics shaping the nation’s future.
