NHL star Brad Marchand surprised attendees at a Halifax U18 hockey game by showing up to show support for a close friend who recently lost his young daughter. JP MacCallum, the head coach of the March and Mill Company Hunters, took a break to grieve the passing of his 10-year-old daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, who succumbed to cancer.
Despite being actively engaged in the NHL regular season with the Florida Panthers, Marchand didn’t think twice about returning home to stand in for MacCallum on the sidelines. Speaking to CBC News, Marchand expressed the devastation felt by the loss of Selah, highlighting her remarkable personality filled with love and vibrancy that impacted many lives.
Selah’s passing on Friday followed a prolonged illness, during which she exhibited immense strength and resilience. Marchand fondly remembered Selah’s generous spirit, inner strength, and the significant influence she had on his life, family, and children.
Over a thousand individuals gathered at the Halifax Forum to offer their support to the grieving family, showcasing a tremendous outpouring of solidarity. Marchand, who has shared a friendship with JP for 25 years, emphasized the pivotal role his friend played in his life, underscoring their deep bond.
Acknowledging the Panthers’ understanding and encouragement of his decision to return home, Marchand revealed their supportive stance, allowing him the time to be there for his friend. The game served as a fundraiser, with various activities like a bake sale and a 50-50 draw contributing to the cause. Notably, a jersey auction was also held to aid Selah’s family.
Paul Graham, the president of the U18 Major Hockey League, lauded the overwhelming support extended to Selah’s family, particularly from the Nova Scotia hockey community, emphasizing their tradition of rallying around one another in times of need. Graham commended Marchand’s immediate response to stand by MacCullum, portraying a deep sense of loyalty and gratitude towards his hometown and the individuals who supported him throughout his journey.
The gesture of Marchand, both as a stakeholder and an alumnus of the league, exemplifies his unwavering connection to his roots and the people who have been instrumental in his life.
