For the second consecutive night, over 100 individuals, including children and pets, sought shelter in the basement of a community hall as red tornado warnings blared on their phones on Saturday evening. Chris Stewart recounted the experience of being at Aquadeo, Sask., where the fire alarm interrupted his dinner. Aquadeo, situated 40 kilometers north of the Battlefords on Jackfish Lake, was the scene of the unfolding events.
Stewart described the atmosphere as initially tense, especially for some young children, but overall, everyone remained composed. People quickly gathered in the basement of the hall, with more than 100 individuals present on both occasions.
According to Environment Canada, a dozen communities in west-central Saskatchewan, including Turtleford, Glaslyn, Medstead, Edam, Paynton, Rabbit Lake, and Spiritwood, were under tornado warnings due to a slow-moving system colliding with another system from Alberta.
Meteorologist Kyle Ziolkowski stated that such occurrences, while relatively rare, are not unusual for the region. The severe weather on Saturday brought heavy rainfall ranging from 20 to 40 millimeters, hail as large as ping-pong to golf balls near Neilburg, and wind gusts up to 90 km/h near North Battleford. No tornado touchdowns were confirmed on Saturday, although Friday saw a different outcome.
Shannon Risling shared her experience of witnessing a tornado touch down near Jackfish Lake on Friday while enjoying time at the beach with her daughter. Risling reported the event to Environment Canada, emphasizing the importance of public reporting in such situations.
Looking ahead, Ziolkowski forecasted a return to calmer conditions with a high-pressure ridge settling over the Prairies. By Sunday morning, Stewart was back on the water, taking advantage of the clear skies for a day of fishing under the beautiful weather.
Despite the recent tumultuous weather, residents are hopeful for a more peaceful week ahead as the region braces for improving conditions.
