The horror film Backrooms debuted at No. 1, grossing over $5 million in Canada and $118 million globally. It has become A24’s highest-grossing film in North America within just five days. Barker’s psychological horror film Obsession secured the second spot, raking in $150 million worldwide since its release.
These young directors have not only captured the attention of the industry but also drawn in a youthful audience, many of whom have followed their journey from YouTube channels. Industry experts believe this trend could influence future project selections.
Aaron Couch, film editor at The Hollywood Reporter, suggests that their YouTube origins have played a significant role in their success.
“The recent box office buzz is reminiscent of the excitement surrounding Barbenheimer, offering a refreshing change with new talents, unknown actors, and a 20-year-old bringing his unique online world to a wider audience,” said Couch.
