Instagram is introducing new paid features for users interested in enhancing their experience on the platform. This new offering called Instagram Plus is currently being tested through a subscription model. Subscribers will have the ability to prolong the visibility of their story posts, showcase their stories at the top of followers’ feeds, track story rewatch metrics, and view other users’ stories discreetly. Additionally, users can create multiple friend lists to regulate access to their stories based on preferences.

This move reflects a broader industry trend shifting away from universally free services towards tiered subscription models, a change that some find exhausting. Financial planner and newsletter author Hanna Horvath noted the prevalence of subscription pricing across various industries, attributing this to the “tierification of everything.” Companies are increasingly offering paid tiers with enhanced features while potentially diminishing the quality of the free base tier to incentivize premium subscriptions.

Instagram has not disclosed the specific locations where Instagram Plus is being tested, but users in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines have shared screenshots of the trial features. The subscription is reportedly priced around $3 Canadian dollars per month in Mexico. This initiative follows a pattern seen on other platforms such as LinkedIn, dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, and Twitter under Elon Musk’s ownership, which introduced paid subscriptions before rebranding as X.

Furthermore, Meta has expressed intentions to explore paid options not only for Instagram but also for Facebook and WhatsApp. This strategy aligns with catering to higher-income consumers who drive a significant portion of spending. While some users may express dissatisfaction with the evolving pricing models, companies prioritize catering to those willing to pay premium prices over those seeking cost-effective solutions.

According to Brett Caraway from the University of Toronto, the Plus features could appeal to highly engaged users seeking increased visibility on the platform. However, there are potential risks associated with these features, such as creating divisions between paying and non-paying users. The introduction of exclusive features for paid subscribers has become a common practice among social media platforms to supplement revenue streams previously reliant on data mining and targeted advertising.
