“Ubisoft Remakes ‘Assassin’s Creed IV’ with Mixed Results”

Ubisoft’s choice of remaking “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag” as the series’ first high-production remake may seem logical given the game’s critical and commercial success since its 2013 release. While the original game is still playable on modern platforms, the gaming industry trend of remaking older titles to mitigate risks associated with new properties persists.

The remake, titled “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced,” portrays the story of Edward Kenway, a former privateer turned pirate during the 1700s era of piracy. Developed on Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, the technical enhancements in “Resynced” are immediately noticeable, with improved visuals and smoother animations enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Despite these advancements, some of the original game’s shortcomings persist in the remake. Issues with hand-to-hand combat and navigation, particularly during ship takeovers, can still be frustrating. The naval gameplay, a fan-favorite aspect, remains visually appealing but cumbersome in execution, leading to prolonged travel times that may test players’ patience.

The narrative structure of “Black Flag Resynced” allows players to explore various storylines in a non-linear fashion, resulting in a fragmented storytelling experience akin to watching a TV series out of order. While some original elements, such as the modern-day interludes and “Freedom Cry” epilogue, have been replaced with new storylines, the depth and development of new characters in these arcs are commendable.

Ultimately, while “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced” is a solid game, it leans more towards a polished version of the original rather than a groundbreaking remake. Newcomers to the series may find the more recent entries like “Valhalla” and “Shadows” more accessible, but the allure of the pirate-filled world and the charismatic protagonist, Edward, make this remake a compelling choice for fans.

“Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced” is now available on Xbox Series X&S, Sony PlayStation 5 consoles, and Windows PC.
