Monica Wright Rogers beams with excitement. Just moments ago at a press event in downtown Toronto, she unveiled Sandy Brondello as the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo. With the team’s roster currently empty, Wright Rogers is already envisioning the impact of this significant appointment.
“We aim to capitalize on this moment,” Wright Rogers shared with CBC Sports. “Our focus is on securing the right free agents by having a coach they are familiar with at the helm.”
Brondello’s credentials speak for themselves. The 57-year-old Australian, with a 27-year WNBA career as a player, assistant coach, and head coach, boasts WNBA championship wins with the 2014 Mercury and the 2024 Liberty. Additionally, she leads her national team and highlighted her bronze-medal victory over Canada at the 2022 World Cup.
Since departing the Liberty, Brondello has received praise from players and coaches alike. She eagerly anticipates the challenge of guiding and constructing an expansion team in Canada, emphasizing the goal of bringing a championship to Toronto.
By appointing Brondello, the Tempo has signaled their intention not just to establish a foundation for women’s basketball in Toronto but to compete and win. The timing is crucial, with a lucrative U.S. media deal and impending free agency period presenting opportunities for the team.
Brondello stressed that the players will define the team’s culture in its inaugural year. The playing style will evolve based on the roster composition, aiming for entertaining and adaptable basketball.
Wright Rogers also highlighted Toronto as a supportive city for sports teams, emphasizing a vision that prioritizes player welfare and career development. However, uncertainties loom, with CBA negotiations ongoing and details such as the expansion draft and free agency start date yet to be finalized.
Despite the challenges, Brondello’s experience and winning mentality bode well for the Tempo. Her goal is to establish a top-tier franchise in Toronto and add more championships to her illustrious career.
