Mangold’s death was attributed to complications arising from kidney disease, a condition he had been battling. Prior to his passing, he publicly disclosed his need for a kidney transplant due to his condition, as he did not have any family members who could donate a kidney with type O blood.

He revealed that he had been dealing with chronic kidney disease since 2006, necessitating him to undergo dialysis while awaiting a transplant.
Jets owner Woody Johnson paid tribute to Mangold, emphasizing his significant role as the linchpin of the team’s offensive line for over a decade. Johnson highlighted Mangold’s exceptional leadership qualities and toughness that defined an era of Jets football.
A moment of silence was observed in honor of Mangold before the Jets clinched their first victory of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite hailing from Ohio, Mangold remained closely connected to New Jersey, where he stayed after retiring from professional football.
Mangold, a former first-round draft pick out of Ohio State, was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and played a pivotal role in the Jets’ success during his tenure. His contributions were recognized when he was inducted into the Jets’ ring of honor in 2022.
