“Met Gala Faces Backlash Ahead of ‘Fashion is Art’ Spectacle”

The upcoming Met Gala is facing challenges this year not related to attendance, glamour, or budget. Criticism, negative publicity, and calls for a boycott have put pressure on the prestigious event. Nonetheless, the annual fashion show and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is set to dazzle on May 4 with its “Costume Art” theme, aiming to showcase fashion as a continuous element throughout art history.

The event’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” offers a versatile red carpet dress code. Curator Andrew Bolton hopes the theme will shift the focus from the debate on whether fashion belongs in the art world to exploring art through the lens of fashion.

Last year, the Met Gala raised over $31 million US, and this year it will take place in its new 1,115-square-meter venue, the Condé M. Nast Galleries. The exhibit will feature mannequins representing often overlooked body types in art history, including larger and disabled bodies.

Renowned figures like Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé are co-chairing the event, bringing star power to the gala. The event will also include a host committee led by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, with notable names like Sabrina Carpenter and Teyana Taylor.

However, Amazon’s involvement, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs, has sparked controversy. The Bezos’ funding of the event has led to protests, criticizing the gala for being associated with worker exploitation and other issues related to Amazon’s practices.

The Met Gala’s exclusivity and high ticket prices have drawn criticism, particularly amid growing wealth inequality. This year, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, known for his focus on affordability, has decided not to attend, breaking a tradition of city leaders attending the gala.

The absence of Mayor Mamdani and the potential retirement of influential figures like Anna Wintour, the long-time force behind the gala’s popularity, raise questions about the event’s cultural significance moving forward. Despite challenges and criticisms, the Costume Institute has been building a financial reserve from Met Gala proceeds since 2016 to ensure its sustainability in the future.
