Irish Woodland Manager Fooled by Dog in Lion Disguise

LISTEN | Complete conversation with Irish woodland manager John O’Reilly:

Upon viewing a video of a large creature resembling a lion in an Irish forest, John O’Reilly experienced conflicting thoughts.

He initially dismissed the idea of a lion inhabiting an Irish woodland but acknowledged the striking resemblance to one.

Subsequently, it was revealed that the animal in question was, in fact, a brown Newfoundland dog styled to look like a lion.

‘Unbelievable Story’

The narrative began with timber workers employed by O’Reilly’s forest management company in County Clare, Ireland, noticing a large animal roaming the woods.

Although the workers had only caught glimpses of the creature, a truck driver managed to capture it on camera last week.

The viral video footage displays a sizable brown animal with a sleek body, shaggy head, and a tuft of fur on its tail, vanishing into the forest.

Despite Ireland not being home to lions, O’Reilly was convinced by what he saw and suspected it might be an exotic pet.

Three side-by-side vertical photos show a brown Newfoundland dog, its body shaved to resemble a male lion.
The national police force of Ireland, An Garda Síochána, investigated reports of a lion sighting and identified the culprit as a Newfoundland dog with a peculiar haircut. (An Garda Síochána Clare)

Consequently, he felt compelled to report the incident to local law enforcement.

O’Reilly recounted their reaction, stating, “I said, ‘Guys you’re not going to believe it,’ showing them the genuine video captured by his worker, not AI-generated. They were equally astounded.”

Following inquiries, the police confirmed on Thursday that the mystery was solved, attributing the sighting to a Newfoundland dog with a stylish haircut named Mouse.

According to police, Mouse, the dog in question, is enjoying the attention from the viral video clip.

Instances of dogs being mistaken for other creatures are not uncommon. For instance, in Norfolk, Va., in 2013, a Labradoodle named Charles the Monarch caused confusion due to its lion-like cut. Similarly, a zoo in China faced backlash last year for painting chow chows to resemble baby pandas.
