A recent arrival at a Cincinnati animal shelter, Gelato the kitten, was discovered with a spinal injury that rendered his back legs unusable. Due to his small size, traditional animal wheelchairs were not suitable for him. Veterinary assistant Mallory Smith, who is fostering Gelato, took matters into her own hands and crafted a makeshift wheelchair using household items like Hot Wheels, zip ties, and duct tape.
The unique wheelchair, made primarily from 99-cent rulers, allowed Gelato to move around and receive physical therapy to regain muscle strength in his hind legs. Despite gaining online fame, the temporary solution was not ideal for long-term use. With the help of an engineer friend, Smith designed a 3D-printed wheelchair for Gelato that can be adjusted as he grows.
Gelato now navigates his surroundings with the aid of his new wheelchair while undergoing regular physiotherapy sessions to improve his mobility. Progress is evident as Gelato has started standing on his own, indicating a promising recovery ahead. Smith hopes Gelato’s story will shed light on the importance of providing diverse assistive devices for animals in need.
Once Gelato is ready for adoption, he is expected to find a loving home quickly, despite Smith’s attachment to him. She believes Gelato’s story will raise awareness about special needs animals and inspire more support for their care and well-being.
