The jury comprising 12 individuals is currently deliberating on the case of Roderick Sutherland, who is the final defendant among nine individuals charged in connection with the murder of Megan Gallagher on September 20, 2020. Sutherland faces charges of manslaughter, unlawful confinement, and offering an indignity to human remains, having pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

Gallagher was tragically murdered following a period of confinement and assault in a Saskatoon garage. Her remains were discovered along the South Saskatchewan River, approximately 105 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon near St. Louis village on September 29, 2022.

As the jury is now sequestered, any publication bans related to evidence, agreed statements of facts, and victim impact statements from prior trials have been lifted. This includes information about the other accused individuals and their legal outcomes that were not disclosed to the jurors.

The first murder charge was brought against Robert (Bobby) Thomas in September 2022, resulting in a guilty plea to second-degree murder in October 2024 and a life sentence with no chance of parole for 18 years. Cheyann Peeteetuce and Summer-Sky Henry, initially charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in January 2025 and received seven-year sentences each.

Ernest Vernon Whitehead, Jessica Badger (Sutherland), and John Wayne Sanderson admitted to offering an indignity to human remains. Charges against Robin John (unlawful confinement and aggravated assault) and Thomas Sutherland (manslaughter) were dropped.

Although Roderick Sutherland was initially facing a first-degree murder charge, it was reduced to manslaughter in August 2025. The jury was instructed not to seek additional information online during the trial proceedings.

During the trial, undisclosed information and developments occurred in the absence of the jury, which could not be reported until the conclusion of the case and jury instructions from Justice John Morrall.

Key points not presented to the jury included a dispute over the wearing of hoodies with references to Megan Gallagher in the courtroom and the criminal history of Cheyann Peeteetuce, who had a significant past record.

Additionally, the discussion about the ‘Vetrovec warning,’ highlighting the caution regarding unreliable witnesses, and the presentation of the defense of “abandonment” by Sutherland’s legal team were highlighted during the trial proceedings.

Justice Morrall issued a warning to the jury regarding the testimony of Robert (Bobby) Thomas and emphasized the importance of corroborating evidence to validate his statements. The defense of abandonment was also permitted as a potential defense strategy for the jury to consider.
