Ted Turner, the bold sports enthusiast and entrepreneur who built a media empire including the groundbreaking news outlet CNN, has passed away at 87, as reported by CNN referencing a statement from Turner Enterprises. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

In September 2018, Turner disclosed his battle with Lewy body dementia, a progressive nerve disorder. Born Robert Edward Turner III in Cincinnati on November 19, 1938, he relocated to the South at the age of nine. He excelled in military schools, becoming a champion debater and yachtsman.

Transitioning from his father’s billboard business, Turner ventured into television by acquiring a station in 1970. This move paved the way for his expansive television group, which included Turner Classic Movies, TNT, and the TBS SuperStation, propelling him to become a billionaire.

Renowned for his influence in U.S. media and entertainment, Turner’s networks covered news, sports, reruns, and classic movies. His legacy includes the creation of CNN in 1980, the first 24-hour all-news network, challenging major networks’ coverage quality.

Apart from his media ventures, Turner owned sports teams and was instrumental in transforming the Atlanta Braves into a successful MLB franchise. His philanthropic gestures, including a $1 billion donation to the United Nations, left a lasting impact on world peace and environmental causes.
