Canadian forward Olivia Smith, a prominent player, sustained an injury in a recent match against Switzerland, resulting in a 1-0 defeat. She has now returned to her club team in England, Arsenal, for specialized treatment for a hip pointer. Additionally, 17-year-old forward Kaylee Hunter has also departed the national team due to a pre-existing injury and is continuing her recovery at AFC Toronto.

The Canadian women’s national team, currently ranked ninth globally, aims to recover from their loss to Switzerland, ranked 24th, as they prepare to face the 11th-ranked Netherlands in an upcoming match. Furthermore, they have scheduled two games against the eighth-ranked Japan in November during the FIFA window to conclude their 2025 fixtures.

Smith sustained her injury during her debut appearance for Canada after transferring from Liverpool to Arsenal in a record-breaking deal earlier this year. The injury occurred when she fell heavily during the game against Switzerland, necessitating medical attention and her subsequent removal from the field.

Canada’s head coach, Casey Stoney, expressed concerns over the treatment Smith received during the match, emphasizing the need for fair play. Smith, a two-time Canada Youth Player of the Year recipient, has been a key contributor to the national team, showcasing her talent with three goals and three assists in her 19 senior appearances.

Hunter, on the other hand, missed the Swiss game due to her injury and has returned to her club for further rehabilitation. Despite her young age, Hunter has been a prolific scorer, netting 14 goals and providing three assists in the Northern Super League this season. Her absence from the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where she was ineligible due to club obligations, highlights her commitment to both club and country football.

Overall, the Canadian women’s national team faces challenges with injuries to key players but remains focused on their upcoming matches to showcase their competitive spirit on the international stage.
