General Motors has announced a $691 million investment in its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to bolster the production of its latest V-8 engines for full-sized trucks and SUVs. The enhancements will position St. Catharines as the third facility to manufacture the sixth generation of the engine, joining Buffalo, N.Y., and Flint, Mich.

This investment comes amidst concerns over the future of Canada’s automotive industry due to U.S. government-imposed tariffs. GM Canada president Jack Uppal stated that the investment solidifies St. Catharines’ pivotal role in one of its key vehicle programs for the foreseeable future.

In addition to the St. Catharines plant, GM has been focusing on its Oshawa, Ont., facility that produces pickup trucks, albeit transitioning from three shifts to two in January. Meanwhile, the CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., remains inactive following the discontinuation of its electric delivery van production last year.

Trevor Longpre, Unifor Local 199 plant chair for the GM powertrain plant, expressed optimism about the investment, highlighting it as a substantial vote of confidence in the plant and its workforce amid industry challenges. The move underscores General Motors’ long-term commitment to St. Catharines as a significant part of its Canadian operations.

While the specific impact on the workforce, which currently comprises nearly 500 active employees with around 150 on layoff, remains uncertain, Longpre emphasized the positive implications of the investment. He noted that in the face of industry uncertainties exacerbated by tariffs and demands for manufacturing relocation, the news signifies a much-needed positive development for both the workers and the community.
