Filmmaker Drew Hyttenrauch seized a rare opportunity to produce a significant project while shedding light on the growing needs within the Down syndrome community, a cause close to his heart as he cares for his sister, Natalie. Together, they collaborated on a commercial shoot in Windsor, Ont., for the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) during Down Syndrome Week.
The commercial emphasizes the challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome as they age, with a focus on the need for improved healthcare systems. The CDSS aims to raise funds for a specialized training course to address the health disparities faced by those with Down syndrome.
Down syndrome, a genetic condition associated with an extra chromosome 21, affects over 22,000 individuals in Canada. Health concerns include heart conditions, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid problems, and respiratory infections. Drew and Natalie Hyttenrauch, both in their 30s, acknowledge these concerns as they navigate the complexities of aging with Down syndrome.
Drew, who runs a production company in Windsor, was inspired to create a meaningful campaign video after discussing his caregiving role on the CDSS website. The commercial showcases individuals with Down syndrome in everyday scenarios, aiming to highlight their thriving lives.
The production brought together actors from across Ontario and a local crew to create a polished national campaign spot. Drew expressed pride in his sister’s performance, while acknowledging the importance of personal support workers (PSWs) who play a crucial role in assisting adults with Down syndrome.
The commercial resonates with the broader community, promoting inclusivity and understanding of individuals with Down syndrome. Drew and Natalie’s collaboration on this project symbolizes a heartfelt commitment to advocating for better care and representation within the Down syndrome community.
