At least 26 individuals lost their lives, with many others reported missing, following a nighttime assault using drones and missiles carried out by Russia on residential buildings in Ternopil, a city in western Ukraine, as stated by Ukraine’s interior minister on Wednesday.
Ihor Klymenko revealed that 26 people remained unaccounted for after the attacks, including three children, while close to 100 individuals sustained injuries. The onslaught involved 476 drones and 48 missiles targeting energy and transportation infrastructure, resulting in emergency power outages in various regions amidst freezing temperatures.
The upper levels of a residential structure in Ternopil were severely damaged in the strike, with plumes of black smoke billowing upwards and an orange glow emanating from a fire within the tower block.
In a Telegram message, Klymenko mentioned that rescue teams worked tirelessly throughout the night, meticulously searching the debris of the ravaged apartment building. He emphasized the daunting task ahead of locating potential survivors buried under the rubble.
Describing the harrowing scene, Klymenko noted that every apartment in the building with two entrances completely burned out, and the rapid spread of flames caused panic among residents who attempted to escape by jumping out of windows. Tragically, three children were among the casualties.
A mother, Oksana Kobel, clung to hope that her son, who was on the ninth floor during the attack, would be found alive. She recounted urging him to seek shelter upon hearing the explosions, only to receive reassurance from him moments before the chaos unfolded.
Following the strikes in Ternopil, reports emerged of similar attacks on residential buildings in other cities, prompting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stress the urgency of international pressure on Russia to halt the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, urging for increased support, including air defense weaponry for Kyiv.
Energy officials reported significant damage to energy infrastructure across seven Ukrainian regions, leading to nationwide power usage restrictions. Witnesses in Lviv reported hearing explosions, while residents in Kyiv sought refuge in metro stations as a precaution.
While Russia denied targeting civilians intentionally, citing retaliatory airstrikes in response to alleged “terrorist attacks” on its territory, Ukraine’s military confirmed launching missile strikes on military sites within Russia.
Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts in Turkey and forthcoming meetings with U.S. military officials aimed to revive peace talks with Russia, amid ongoing hostilities since the invasion in February 2022. Despite prior rounds of negotiations facilitated by Turkey, direct engagements between Kyiv and Moscow have remained elusive, with sporadic prisoner exchanges marking limited progress in easing tensions.
International efforts to assist Ukraine and shield it from further aggression have been ongoing, with discussions on postwar funding, security guarantees, and potential American commitments shaping the discourse on future security arrangements in the region. However, the prospect of deploying American troops in Ukraine has been ruled out by the U.S. to date.
