The reigning Canadian men’s champion remains unfazed by the return of Keegan Messing and the resurgence of Stephen Gogolev in figure skating. A heated battle is on the horizon for Canada’s sole men’s spot at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, a prospect that excites Sadovsky.
Expressing his love for the thrill of competition, Sadovsky welcomes the increased rivalry. He views competition as a source of motivation that drives him to excel. This weekend, he joins 17 other Canadian athletes at Skate Canada International in Saskatoon, a pivotal event on the Grand Prix circuit.
Hailing from Vaughan, Ontario, the 26-year-old clinched his second national title in January last year in Quebec. Initially considered a top contender for the Olympic spot, Sadovsky faced a challenge when Messing, a two-time Olympian, announced his comeback in August. Messing’s impressive scores could potentially catapult him to the forefront of the competition, although it remains to be seen if he can reclaim his former prowess.
While many were surprised by Messing’s return, Sadovsky had heard rumors beforehand and was mentally prepared for the development. His coach, Tracey Wainman, emphasizes the importance of adapting to unexpected circumstances in the sport. Despite facing unforeseen challenges in the past, including filling in for Messing at the 2022 Olympics and encountering travel disruptions, Sadovsky remains focused on his goals.
Although Messing will not be competing at Skate Canada International, Sadovsky is gearing up to face Gogolev for the third time this season. Their previous encounters at the Cranberry Cup and Nebelhorn Trophy yielded varying results, highlighting the competitive landscape in men’s figure skating.
