Canada’s women’s soccer team faced a costly 1-0 defeat against Switzerland in a recent international match, with star striker Olivia Smith forced off the pitch due to injury. Alayah Pilgrim scored the lone goal for Switzerland in a physical game that saw Canada squander opportunities, including two in stoppage time. This marked the first victory for Switzerland over Canada.

Smith sustained an injury following a heavy fall in the 32nd minute, seemingly due to a challenge from Swiss defender Viola Calligaris. The 21-year-old was visibly distressed and had to be assisted off the field, not placing weight on her right leg. Despite protests from Canada’s coach Casey Stoney, the referee did not penalize the incident. Smith, who recently transferred to Arsenal from Liverpool for a record fee, was replaced by Marie-Yasmine Alidou.

In addition to Smith’s injury, Canada struggled against Switzerland’s aggressive play. The team, which had a disappointing loss to the United States in their previous match, will face the Netherlands next and then play Japan in November. Stoney fielded a strong starting lineup with a combined total of 813 caps.

Switzerland dominated early in the game, with Pilgrim scoring in the 12th minute. Canadian striker Janine Sonis missed several scoring opportunities, including a shot over the bar and two attempts blocked by the Swiss goalkeeper. Despite efforts from Adriana Leon and others, Canada failed to equalize. The team was missing key players due to injuries, with Stoney’s side aiming to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.

Canada had previously maintained an unbeaten record against Switzerland but struggled in this encounter. The Swiss team, coached by Pia Sundhage, faced relegation in the UEFA Women’s Nations League but will continue their World Cup qualifying journey. The defeat extends Switzerland’s path to the 2027 World Cup, with upcoming matches crucial for their qualification hopes.
