After completing a record-breaking journey of 406,771 kilometers around the moon, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch are gearing up to share their remarkable experiences with the public. The four astronauts will be hosting a media Q&A session from the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, at 2:30 p.m. ET today, which will be broadcast live on CBC.ca.
Since their return to Earth last Friday, the astronauts have undergone medical evaluations and mission debriefings, and most importantly, have reunited with their families. The homecomings have been heartwarming, with Victor Glover receiving a warm welcome from neighbors who lined the sidewalks with flags and signs, and Christina Koch being greeted emotionally by her dog, Sadie.
On Saturday, the astronauts were honored by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston in the presence of numerous VIP guests, including flight directors, Orion capsule and exploration system managers, military officials, and members of Congress. The event was an emotional one for the crew, who have trained together for years and spent 10 days in close quarters inside a capsule during their historic mission.
During the ceremony, Wiseman expressed the deep bond formed among the crew members and the unique experience they shared. He reflected on the challenges of being far away from home and the profound appreciation for life on Earth. Despite the emotional reunion, the astronauts have already resumed their duties, with Hansen engaging in lunar surface simulations to test his physical capabilities post-mission.
Additionally, Hansen announced the winner of the Aqualunar Challenge, a competition aimed at developing water purification solutions for lunar settlements. The $400,000 prize was awarded to the Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation for their innovative approach.
Looking ahead, NASA is planning to accelerate the launch schedule for Artemis missions and establish a lunar base. The Artemis II mission marked a significant milestone in human space exploration, as highlighted by Hansen during the event in Houston. He emphasized the collective effort behind the mission’s success and encouraged the audience to see themselves reflected in the astronauts’ accomplishments.
