“Apple Raises Prices on iPads and MacBooks Amid Chip Shortage”

Share

Apple announced price increases for its iPad and MacBook models due to rising memory and storage chip costs linked to the AI industry’s data center expansion. The company explained that it had absorbed previous cost hikes but was now compelled to adjust prices to reflect current market conditions.

Apple’s official website promptly reflected the price adjustments, with the entry-level MacBook Neo now starting at $949, up by $150, while the Education model increased to $819 from $679. Prices for HomePod smart speakers and Apple TV also saw hikes, but the iPhone prices remained unchanged.

The surge in prices is attributed to AI firms prioritizing chip orders over consumer electronics, resulting in a shortage of critical components like RAM. Major memory manufacturers, including Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix, have diverted production capacity to cater to AI chipmakers, leading to supply constraints for electronics manufacturers.

Economists and industry experts noted the unusual trend of rising memory prices, driven by the AI industry’s escalating demand. The scarcity of components has impacted various sectors, including gaming consoles. Microsoft and Valve have adjusted their pricing to reflect the elevated component costs, with Microsoft’s Xbox prices increasing by $100 to $150 per unit.

Sony and Nintendo have also raised prices for their gaming consoles in response to escalating component costs, with Sony’s PlayStation 5 seeing multiple price hikes in recent months. The ongoing chip shortage is forecasted to persist until at least 2027, with companies investing in expanding manufacturing capacity to address the supply-demand gap.
