Alberta Teachers’ Strike Leaves Children Hungry

Several charitable organizations are reporting that numerous children in Alberta are experiencing food insecurity due to the suspension of school food programs amid a provincewide teachers strike that has now reached its eighth day. Jared Jorstad, a spokesperson for Hope Mission, shared a concerning story about a mother who sacrificed her own meals to ensure her children were fed during the strike. The strike, which began on October 6 and involves 51,000 teachers, has resulted in the closure of about 2,500 schools, depriving approximately 750,000 students of access to free breakfasts and lunches provided by school cafeterias.

Hope Mission has collaborated with five Catholic schools in Edmonton to distribute paper bag lunches to students in need. Around 200 to 250 students have been receiving these lunches daily since the strike commenced. The Alberta Teachers’ Association members are engaged in the largest walkout in the province’s history, with key issues in the contract dispute revolving around wages, classroom overcrowding, and support for students with diverse needs.

The rejection of a government proposal last month, which included a 12% pay increase over four years and the hiring of 3,000 additional teachers, has exacerbated the situation. Laura Giesbrecht, a spokesperson for The Mustard Seed non-profit in Red Deer, expressed deep concern over the reduced number of lunches being provided daily due to the strike. She highlighted the distressing reality that many students may now lack access to essential meals throughout the day.

Efforts are being made to ensure that students are aware of available meal services, with partnerships established to deliver food to children participating in local programs. The importance of nutritious meals for students’ overall well-being and academic success was emphasized, with organizations like Breakfast Club of Canada urging a swift resolution to the ongoing dispute between teachers and the government. The pause in school meal programs has left a gap that was once filled with communal dining experiences free of any negative perceptions associated with receiving assistance.
