The Toronto International Film Festival kicked off its festivities by revealing five special presentations for this year’s event, marking their first major unveiling following the earlier announcements of the opening-night film and gala showcases. The 51st edition of Canada’s renowned film festival will feature premieres of various films, including the star-studded sci-fi comedy “Alpha Gang,” the Argentinian revenge thriller “Glaxo,” the romance “Love of Your Life” starring Margaret Qualley, the true-story drama “The Housewife,” and the action film “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” led by Mahershala Ali.
“Alpha Gang” is set to have its international premiere at the festival, signifying its first screening outside its home country. Industry experts anticipate that as an American movie, it will likely have an earlier world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The other four films are scheduled to make their world premieres at TIFF.
Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, “Alpha Gang” narrates the tale of aliens sent to conquer Earth disguised as a 1950s biker gang who encounter the unexpected obstacle of human emotions thwarting their plans. Originally announced in October 2024, the film underwent several delays and cast changes before finalizing its current lineup, which includes Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, and Léa Seydoux.
Adapted from a 2009 novel by Argentinian author Hernán Ronsino, “Glaxo” focuses on a small-town drama triggered by the arrival of a policeman and his wife, leading to a chain reaction of desire and revenge. Director Benjamin Naishtat, known for his socially and politically charged works, is expected to delve into Argentina’s historical context of the 1950s-1980s in this film.
In “Love of Your Life,” Margaret Qualley stars alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger in a poignant narrative of loss and romance. Produced by Ryan Gosling and helmed by director Rachel Morrison, the film explores a widow’s journey to reconnect with a past love, with recent news of Gabriel Basso joining the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Housewife,” directed by Canadian filmmaker Ben Shirinian, follows a journalist investigating a suspected Nazi officer living in Queens in 1964, whose mission becomes complex when he befriends the officer’s wife. The film features Naomi Watts, Tye Sheridan, Michael Imperioli, and Norman Reedus.
Starring Mahershala Ali, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” portrays a deeply religious hitman navigating a crisis of faith while protecting his children in Houston, offering a thrilling narrative akin to “John Wick.” Directed by Bassam Tariq, the film’s recent teaser trailer release teases a kaleidoscopic and intense experience, with a cast including Giancarlo Esposito, John Cho, and Tramell Tillman, and a planned theatrical release later this fall.
Additionally, TIFF previously announced Siân Heder’s “Being Heumann” as the opening night film, along with “Prima Facie” and “The Assassin(s)” premiering as gala presentations. The festival is scheduled to run from Sept. 10 to 20 this year, with the full film lineup set to be revealed on Aug. 11. Ticket sales will commence for TIFF members on Aug. 21 and for the general public on Aug. 31.
