Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized Canada’s commitment to addressing public safety, transnational repression, and foreign interference while engaging in trade discussions with India. Anand highlighted the importance of prioritizing public safety and security in government operations with all nations, including India.
In a recent interview on CBC’s Power & Politics, Anand discussed the ongoing negotiations for a new trade agreement with India, emphasizing the need to maintain independent law enforcement agencies. The announcement of trade negotiations between Canada and India followed a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 summit in South Africa.
Carney expressed optimism about the potential for a trade deal to significantly increase Canada-India trade to $70 billion in a social media post. The thawing of diplomatic relations between the two countries comes after previous tensions related to allegations of Indian involvement in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Anand acknowledged the evolving global trade landscape and the need for Canada to adapt its foreign policy focus, emphasizing the importance of upholding core values such as protecting democratic institutions. She reassured that while Canada seeks to strengthen trade relationships, it remains committed to defending its interests and values.
India’s high commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, emphasized the mutual understanding between the two countries regarding the importance of addressing security concerns while fostering bilateral ties. However, some Sikh activists, including Sikhs for Justice, expressed opposition to the trade engagement with India, citing ongoing issues and historical tensions.
The referendum held by Canadian Sikhs for an independent Sikh Punjab coincided with the trade announcement, reflecting divergent views within the Sikh community regarding the engagement with India. The Indian government has criticized the referendum movement, describing it as a challenge to its sovereignty.
Carney highlighted India’s significance as a trading partner and emphasized the need for vigilance against foreign interference. Canada has established cooperation with Indian law enforcement agencies and national security advisers to enhance security measures and protect Canadian interests.
Overall, the trade negotiations between Canada and India signal a potential boost in economic ties, but ongoing discussions also underscore the importance of addressing security challenges and respecting core values in international relations.
