Chu’s debut novel, “The Stand-In,” originated during the 2020 pandemic and was published by Audible as an “audio-first” before its print release. Following this success, Chu has continued this trend with her latest book, “Just Kiss Already,” marking her sixth publication to debut as an audiobook.
The romance genre, particularly in audiobook format, has witnessed a surge in popularity. Audible’s global consumer content head, Diana Dapito, noted that romance is among the fastest-growing genres on the platform in Canada. Additionally, BookNet Canada reported a doubling in the preference for audiobooks from 8% in 2020 to 16% in 2025.

Romance audiobook narrator Angelina Rocca underlined the escapism that romance offers listeners, comparing a well-narrated audiobook to “cinema in your ears.” By incorporating sound effects and vocal techniques that prioritize female pleasure and perspective, narrators enhance the immersive experience for listeners.
Despite lingering stigma surrounding romance novels, the genre’s current popularity has empowered enthusiasts to embrace their love for romantic storytelling openly. Sarah Wendell, co-founder of Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, highlighted the private and immersive nature of audiobooks, offering listeners a personal escape within their own space.
Lizz Kidd from Hopeless Romantic Books in Toronto praised audio subscription apps as a gateway for exploring diverse styles and levels of erotica and romance. She encouraged listeners to indulge in these immersive experiences to discover new narratives and support artists in the process.
