Police are currently investigating a break-in at a residence belonging to NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The incident occurred while Gilgeous-Alexander was participating in a game the previous night. The Thunder redirected inquiries to the Nichols Hills police department, located north of downtown Oklahoma City, who did not disclose the identity of the homeowner or the items stolen.
Originally hailing from Hamilton, Ont., Gilgeous-Alexander’s home was reportedly burglarized around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday while the Thunder were competing against the Washington Wizards. Despite immediate police response, the suspects had already fled the scene. The authorities assured the public’s safety, stating that there is no imminent danger.
This burglary aligns with a series of similar incidents targeting prominent athletes’ residences throughout the United States. High-end goods believed to be in athletes’ homes have made them attractive targets for burglaries. Notable athletes such as NFL’s Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow, NBA’s Luka Doncic, and NHL’s Evgeni Malkin have also fallen victim to such break-ins.
Law enforcement agencies have cautioned sports organizations about thieves exploiting game days when players are absent, often gaining entry by breaking rear windows. In response to these threats, the NBA issued recommendations to teams in November 2024 aimed at enhancing home security measures. Suggestions include installing updated alarm systems with cameras, storing valuables in secure safes, removing property listings revealing interior photos, employing security services during extended absences, and utilizing guard dogs for added protection.
