U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at the potential cancellation of a series of concerts marking the nation’s 250th anniversary following the withdrawal of several artists. Trump suggested the idea of delivering a speech and hosting a rally instead, boasting about his drawing power compared to legendary figures like Elvis Presley.
One of the latest departures from the lineup was Bret Michaels, the lead singer of Poison, who became the fifth musician to opt-out of the Freedom 250 concerts set to take place from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The Freedom 250 event, themed “Celebrating the Triumph of the American Spirit,” has faced criticism for allegedly glorifying Trump through various initiatives such as featuring his image on coins, his signature on bills, and even proposing a special passport with his likeness.
In addition to Bret Michaels, other artists like country singer Martina McBride and the funk and soul group the Commodores have also withdrawn from participating in the anniversary celebrations.
