Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, Fjord, set in Norway and delving into political polarization, has captured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or win, following his acclaimed work on 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Amidst a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, Fjord garnered widespread praise for its compelling narrative exploring what Mungiu described as “left-wing fundamentalism.”
The film features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who relocate to Norway, only to face a challenging situation where their children are removed by child services due to disciplinary actions involving spanking. Reflecting on the current societal landscape, Mungiu remarked, “Today the society is split. It’s divided. It’s radicalized.” He emphasized that the film serves as a call against all forms of fundamentalism and advocates for concepts like trauma, inclusion, and empathy as crucial values that need more frequent application.
With this victory, Mungiu joins an elite group of ten filmmakers who have clinched the Palme d’Or twice. His earlier work, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a poignant Romanian abortion-themed drama, had previously earned him the prestigious award in 2007. The success of Fjord further extends a remarkable streak in film history, with Neon, the specialized distribution label, now claiming a total of seven consecutive Palme d’Or triumphs.
Fjord contributes to this exceptional winning streak, following in the footsteps of previous champions such as Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident from the last year and Anora, the 2024 victor that went on to secure the coveted best picture accolade at the Oscars.
