British singer Dua Lipa has taken legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking a minimum of $15 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges that Samsung unlawfully used her image to promote their television sets without her consent, displaying a copyrighted photo of the singer on the packaging of TV boxes for retail sale. The image in question, titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is owned solely by Lipa. The lawsuit was filed in a California federal court on Friday.
Samsung Electronics declined to provide a comment on the ongoing legal matter. Lipa’s legal representatives have not responded to requests for comments on the case. In addition to claims of copyright and trademark infringement, Lipa also accuses Samsung of violating her publicity rights.
Lipa’s legal team submitted social media screenshots as evidence, indicating that the use of her image on the TV packaging influenced consumers’ purchasing decisions. Despite Lipa’s previous demands for Samsung to cease using her image, the company allegedly continued to do so, causing harm to the singer’s brand identity and commercial reputation by misleading the public into thinking she endorsed the products.
