TikTok Influencer Supporting Mali Military Executed

Armed individuals in Mali have tragically ended the life of a TikTok influencer who used her platform to express support for the country’s military forces. Mariame Cissé was abducted last Friday at a market in Echel and later executed in Tonka’s Independence Square in front of witnesses, as confirmed by Yehia Tandina, the mayor of Timbuktu. While the mayor of Tonka, Mamadou Konipo, acknowledged the incident, he did not provide further details.

The village of Tonka, located approximately 150 kilometers from Timbuktu along the Niger River, is known to be an area where the militant group Jama’at Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), linked to al-Qaeda, operates. The perpetrators behind Cissé’s murder have not been identified or claimed responsibility for the act.

Cissé, who was not affiliated with the military, occasionally shared images of herself in military attire with her sizable following of over 140,000 followers on TikTok. This behavior likely attracted the attention of the armed assailants. Prior to her abduction, Cissé had received threats of violence, according to Tandina.

Two local sources, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns, corroborated the events surrounding Cissé’s abduction and subsequent killing. While neither personally witnessed the execution, one source indicated they had learned about it from individuals present at the scene, while the other received information from Cissé’s family.

Through her TikTok content, Cissé aimed to showcase and support her community, often featuring herself in military gear with captions like “Vive Mali.” Her intent was to uplift her community and show solidarity with the Malian army in their efforts to protect citizens and property, as highlighted in a state TV report.

Mali has been grappling with armed groups since 2012, with the situation intensifying over the years. The military took control in 2020 under the guise of addressing insecurity, followed by another coup the subsequent year. Insecurity has only worsened since then, according to various monitoring organizations.

Armed groups, particularly JNIM, have a stronghold in vast rural areas of Mali. Currently, the nation is facing a fuel blockade imposed by JNIM, adding to the challenges faced by the landlocked country.
