Prince Edward Island’s Premier, Rob Lantz, has urged the federal RCMP and Canada’s anti-money-laundering agency to launch immediate and transparent investigations into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering involving certain Buddhist groups on the island. Lantz’s call for further scrutiny follows statements made by a former solicitor general and a former RCMP superintendent during a recent press conference on Parliament Hill. These individuals suggested the existence of information that could necessitate a criminal investigation, prompting Lantz to emphasize the importance of addressing Islanders’ concerns and seeking clarity.
In letters addressed to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme and Financial Transactions Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) CEO Sarah Paquet, the premier’s office highlighted specific allegations surrounding two Buddhist groups located in eastern P.E.I. The letters stressed the need for a thorough examination of the activities of these groups amid longstanding public speculation and uncertainty. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding assertions that Prince Edward Island has been utilized as a “forward operating base for the Chinese Communist Party.”
The gravity of the allegations prompted the premier’s office to stress the importance of a responsible and factual investigation by relevant federal authorities to address potential foreign interference issues. P.E.I. officials underscored the significance of transparency, fairness, and community trust in handling such matters, emphasizing the need for established legal processes over conjecture.
GEBIS, one of the implicated Buddhist organizations, expressed support for the investigation, welcoming the opportunity for a transparent inquiry by the RCMP and FINTRAC. The group denounced baseless accusations and discrimination, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based investigations to address concerns about foreign interference.
Local authorities, including the Town of Three Rivers and Minister of Economic Development Darlene Compton, voiced support for the federal investigation, citing the necessity of transparency and accountability in preserving public confidence. Compton highlighted the limitations faced by the province in addressing these issues and emphasized the importance of federal involvement to address longstanding concerns.
As the investigations progress, Lantz and P.E.I. government officials have reiterated their commitment to collaborating with federal agencies to ensure a comprehensive examination of the allegations. The premier urged patience and trust in the investigative process, emphasizing the goal of providing Islanders with clarity and maintaining the welcoming environment that defines Prince Edward Island.
