The police confirmed on Thursday that the body of Samuel Bird, a 14-year-old boy, has been found, leading to a murder charge in connection with his death. Alanna Bird, his mother, made the announcement of the discovery on social media. The Edmonton Police Service disclosed in a news release that the remains were discovered in a rural area outside of Edmonton.
A 38-year-old man named Bryan Farrell was apprehended and charged with second-degree murder and tampering with a body in relation to Bird’s demise. Farrell also faces 13 other charges, including aggravated assault, arson, illegal possession of a firearm, assaulting a peace officer, making threats, and fraud over $5,000.
Court documents reveal that the arson charges against Farrell are linked to the property in west Edmonton where Bird was last seen before his disappearance. The police executed a search warrant at the residence on September 18th, and shortly after, the house succumbed to a suspicious fire.
Farrell is also accused of making threats towards a woman regarding Samuel’s mother. Police have asserted that no other suspects are being sought in relation to Bird’s death, with Farrell being the sole individual charged.
Samuel Bird, a member of Paul First Nation, had been missing since June 1 after leaving his home in west Edmonton to visit a friend. The community, along with volunteers and search teams, embarked on an extensive search to locate him. Tiera Williams, who actively participated in the search efforts, expressed a mix of emotions upon hearing the news of Bird’s discovery, emphasizing the need for justice for the young boy.
Surveillance footage captured Bird walking through the grounds of Holy Cross School around 8:30 p.m. on the day of his disappearance. His last known whereabouts were at a friend’s house in the vicinity of 150th Street and 106th Avenue, where police carried out a search warrant in September.
Earlier investigations revealed that Bird’s disappearance was deemed criminal, with authorities suspecting foul play leading to his death and the concealment of his body outside the city. Detective Jared Buhler, the lead investigator from the EPS homicide section, expressed hope that the resolution of the case would provide closure and justice for Samuel’s family.
