Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, known for its rich history of hosting music legends like Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash, is marking its 50th anniversary this year. Established in 1976 by renowned Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, along with his brother Bob Lanois and partner Bob Doidge, the studio is situated in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E.

Recently acquired by Mike Bruce, Debbie Bruce, and Marco Mondano in 2023, Grant Avenue Studio has retained its historical charm and unique ambiance. According to Bruce, the studio, with minimal updates since the 1970s and ’80s, still exudes an energy that reflects its illustrious past. Notable figures like Brian Eno have graced the studio, further adding to its prestigious reputation.

With a diverse clientele ranging from opera singers to indie artists, the studio has become a hub for musical creativity in Hamilton. To commemorate its 50th year, Grant Avenue Studio will continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” initiative, featuring intimate YouTube concerts showcasing local talent.

A highlight of the studio is its vintage MCI JH-500C console, a piece of music history used on iconic albums like The Eagles’ “Hotel California” and ACDC’s “Back in Black.” This historical equipment, coupled with the studio’s unwavering dedication to quality and innovation, has solidified its status as a premier recording destination.

In celebration of this significant milestone, Grant Avenue Studio has lined up a series of special events, including an anniversary party, an exhibition at Hamilton Civic Museums, and the revival of its Road to Supercrawl contest. As one of Canada’s longest-standing studios, Grant Avenue Studio continues to uphold its legacy as a pillar of the music industry.
