Canadian tennis players Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov both secured spots in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland, after winning their matches in straight sets on Thursday.
Auger-Aliassime, the two-time defending champion, delivered a strong performance against Marin Cilic of Croatia, winning 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) and firing 28 aces. The Montreal native dominated on his first serve, winning 96% of points without facing a break point. This victory marked his sixth consecutive indoor win following his recent triumph at the Brussels tournament. As the fifth seed, Auger-Aliassime is now in contention for a place in the ATP Finals in Turin.
On the other hand, Shapovalov also had a successful match, defeating Valentin Royer of France 7-6 (5), 6-2 and hitting 11 aces. The player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, broke his opponent three times and won 76% of first-serve points. Shapovalov’s next challenge will be against Joao Fonseca of Brazil, while Auger-Aliassime is set to face Jaume Munar of Spain, who caused an upset by defeating Ben Shelton of the United States 6-3, 6-4 in the previous round.
If both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov win their quarterfinal matches, they could potentially face each other in an all-Canadian semifinal showdown at the tournament.
