Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that recounts the discovery of an ancient boulder uncovered during city infrastructure work in their area amid the COVID-19 pandemic. At a recent unveiling event at Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan expressed the significance of the signage in educating and engaging the public about the “Bellwood Boulder.” The sign details how this massive erratic, deposited by glaciers around 10,000 years ago, remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021 when it was unearthed during water pipe replacement.

During the pandemic lockdown, Sreenivasan and fellow residents found solace in the presence of the large rock, which became a gathering spot and conversation hub for the community. Despite initial plans to crush the boulder for easier removal, community efforts led by Sreenivasan and others successfully saved it, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural history and fostering neighborhood connections during times of isolation.

Following advocacy from residents and local officials, the boulder was carefully transported to Windsor Park, where it now stands as a symbol of community unity and resilience. Sreenivasan hopes that the sign not only highlights the rock’s preservation but also serves as a testament to the strength of collective action in safeguarding shared heritage. The story of the “Bellwood Boulder” underscores the power of community collaboration and the positive impact it can have on preserving historical landmarks for future generations.
