A previous employee of Beast Industries is taking legal action against MrBeast’s media production company for alleged wrongful termination following her maternity leave and amid claims of sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the workplace.
The lawsuit, brought by Lorrayne Mavromatis in a federal court in North Carolina, accuses MrBeastYouTube and GameChanger 24/7 of violating federal regulations that provide eligible employees with job-protected leave for childbirth and other qualifying family and medical reasons.
Mavromatis also filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging discrimination based on sex, pregnancy, and retaliation.
She asserted that she worked tirelessly after giving birth and even while in the delivery room, sharing, “I was still bleeding, and I just had to show up.” Shortly after returning to work full-time, she claimed she was dismissed.
A spokesperson from Beast Industries dismissed the lawsuit as a “clout-chasing complaint,” attributing Mavromatis’s job loss to a reorganization by the new head of ecommerce that led to the elimination of her position.
The company presented a workplace message exchange in which a colleague suggested Mavromatis should not be checking messages after she canceled a meeting due to being in labor at the hospital.
Addressing allegations of failing to inform her of her rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the company shared evidence of Mavromatis acknowledging receipt of the employee handbook containing FMLA policies.
Mavromatis’s legal action sheds light on the internal culture of Beast Industries amid efforts to improve workplace dynamics as the media empire expands into new ventures such as television and financial services.
The lawsuit portrays a workplace environment fraught with misogyny and toxicity, reflecting past scrutiny of the company’s culture following controversies involving MrBeast and his team members.
Beast Industries underwent changes after addressing workplace harassment issues, leading to the termination of several employees based on a third-party investigation’s findings.
MrBeast’s expanding presence in the entertainment industry outside of YouTube coincides with the ongoing growth of Beast Industries, which is actively hiring new executives and aiming for success independent of MrBeast’s personal brand.
Mavromatis’s legal action comes at a time when MrBeast is set to be honored at the Time100 celebration, highlighting the contrast between public recognition and internal workplace issues.
The lawsuit also highlights the intense work culture at Beast Industries, as described in a document circulated among employees emphasizing extreme dedication to work.
Mavromatis’s experience, from her rapid promotions within the company to her allegations of mistreatment and discrimination, underscores the challenges faced by employees in toxic work environments.
The involvement of the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in supporting Mavromatis’s case underscores the broader social impact of addressing workplace harassment and discrimination.
The lawsuit against MrBeast’s media company reflects a broader societal push to hold powerful individuals and organizations accountable for creating safe and respectful work environments.
