Ester Ledecka to Prioritize Snowboarding Gold at Olympic Clash

Ester Ledecka, the Winter Olympics’ sole female athlete to secure gold in two distinct sports simultaneously, has faced a challenging decision ahead of the Milan-Cortina Games. The Czech athlete has opted to forgo the alpine downhill competition to focus on pursuing a third consecutive Olympic gold in snowboarding’s giant slalom due to an unavoidable scheduling clash. Despite her efforts to resolve the conflict, the competitions are set to occur on the same day, making it impossible for her to participate in both events.

In her pursuit to reconcile the conflicting schedules, the 30-year-old made an unsuccessful appeal to the International Olympic Committee, with the support of Johan Eliasch, the head of skiing’s governing body, FIS. Ledecka expressed her disappointment, mentioning that while she shed a few tears over the situation, she acknowledged that all possible steps were taken to address the issue. She emphasized her unique position as the only athlete to qualify for an event in two sports for the third time, hoping that this achievement would be considered in the scheduling process.

The final round of snowboarding’s parallel giant slalom is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Livigno, Italy, on February 8, while the women’s downhill event is set to take place in Cortina at 11:30 a.m. on the same day. The geographical distance between the two venues, approximately a four-hour drive, further complicates the logistical challenge.

Jiří Kejval, the head of the Czech Olympic Committee, confirmed that the current program is unlikely to undergo changes, expressing regrets over the circumstances while emphasizing that maximum efforts were made to address the situation.

Ledecka previously made history during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games by being the only woman to qualify for both alpine skiing and snowboarding competitions, ultimately securing gold in the super-G and parallel giant slalom events. She continued her success at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games by defending her snowboarding gold and achieving commendable results in other alpine events. Additionally, at this year’s alpine skiing world championships, she clinched a bronze medal in the downhill discipline.

Looking ahead, the women’s super-G event at the upcoming Olympics is scheduled for February 12, allowing Ledecka the opportunity to participate. Her remarkable achievements and versatility in multiple sports continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
