Blue Jays pitchers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt have rejoined the team’s roster for the American League Championship Series against Seattle, while shortstop Bo Bichette remains sidelined due to a left knee sprain. The teams unveiled their 26-man rosters ahead of Game 1 at Rogers Centre. Manager John Schneider stated that Scherzer is expected to be prepared for a starting role or extended appearance, while Bassitt will be stationed in the bullpen and ready for any situation.
Schneider emphasized the unpredictability of playoff games, noting the importance of having both pitchers available as needed. The Blue Jays will start rookie Trey Yesavage in Game 2, with Shane Bieber taking the mound in Game 3 when the series shifts to Seattle. The pitching order remains the same as in the division series against the New York Yankees, with Kevin Gausman starting the opener.
Although Schneider did not confirm a Game 4 starter, he hinted that Scherzer is likely to be involved. Scherzer, an eight-time all-star, had a mixed season with a 5-5 record and a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts. Bassitt, on the other hand, posted an 11-9 record with a 3.96 ERA in 32 appearances.
Bichette, the Blue Jays’ hits leader this season, continues to progress toward a return, engaging in outfield activities and simulated games. Despite his absence, he remains involved in team meetings and is providing valuable insights. The Mariners have added pitcher Bryan Woo and utility player Miles Mastrobuoni to their roster for the series, replacing Luke Raley and Ben Williamson.
The Blue Jays, appearing in their first ALCS since 2016, are aiming to secure their first World Series title since 1993. The Mariners, after a grueling five-game series against Detroit, arrived in Toronto late Saturday night for the upcoming games.
