“Iconic ‘Eyeball Rocks’ Along Nova Scotia Highway Set for Removal”

The iconic “eyeball rocks” overlooking Nova Scotia’s Highway 103, painted by local artists Jason Smith and Neil back in October 2017, are set to be removed as part of the highway twinning project. The rocks, initially intended to be emojis, were transformed into eyes with pupils after a highway supervisor interrupted their painting session.

Over the years, these painted boulders have become a cherished unofficial landmark for travelers, alongside other artistic additions along Highway 103. Despite not being responsible for other highway artwork, Smith and Neil have diligently maintained and updated the eyes, excluding the red bloodshot lines added post-cannabis legalization in 2018.

Plans to blast the boulders have stirred mixed emotions among the public, with some lamenting the loss of the unique landmark and others hopeful for new artistic opportunities in the area. The Department of Public Works has cited safety concerns as the primary reason for removing the rocks, with construction nearing their location.

While Smith expressed sadness over the impending removal, he acknowledged the legacy the painted rocks have left behind and hopes they will continue to bring smiles to people’s faces in memory. The blasting is expected to take place later this month, marking the end of an era for the beloved “eyeball rocks.”
