The Seattle Mariners staged a late offensive surge to secure a 6-2 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Friday. With this victory, the Mariners now hold a 3-2 series lead, leaving the Blue Jays in a precarious position as they face a must-win Game 6 in Toronto on Sunday.
Pitcher Kevin Gausman delivered a solid performance for the Blue Jays, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing only one run, a solo home run by Eugenio Suárez. Despite Gausman’s efforts, the Jays found themselves trailing until the fifth inning when George Springer’s RBI double tied the game at 1-1. The Jays then took the lead in the following inning with Ernie Clement’s RBI single bringing in Alejandro Kirk.
Although the Jays were not hitting home runs as in previous games, they consistently put runners on base with multiple batters hitting doubles throughout the game. However, the momentum shifted when Springer exited the game in the seventh inning after being hit on the knee by a pitch.
Seattle’s Cal Raleigh leveled the game with a solo home run off Toronto reliever Brendon Little in the eighth inning. Little then struggled with back-to-back walks and eventually gave up a grand slam to Suárez, extending Seattle’s lead to 6-2. The Jays failed to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, sealing their defeat.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson highlighted the importance of key at-bats that led to the grand slam, emphasizing the significance of getting runners on base at crucial moments. Blue Jays manager John Schneider defended his decision to bring in Little, stating that the team had confidence in his abilities despite the outcome.
The series now shifts back to Toronto for Game 6, where rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage will take the mound for the Jays. A potential Game 7, if needed, would also be played in Toronto. The winner of the ALCS will advance to the World Series, with the Blue Jays aiming to reach the pinnacle stage they last graced in the ’90s, while the Mariners seek their first appearance in the Fall Classic.
In a separate series, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series, setting the stage for the ALCS winner to face the Dodgers in the World Series. Los Angeles, a two-time World Series champion in the last five years, awaits their opponent for the ultimate showdown.
