“Vancouver Photographer Wins Top Prize for Eclipse Bird Shot”

Share

After meticulous planning, Liron Gertsman from Vancouver achieved his goal of capturing an exceptional bird photo. Gertsman was recently crowned the Bird Photographer of the Year for a striking image he snapped in 2024 off the Mexican coast during a total solar eclipse, featuring the silhouette of a frigatebird in flight.

Gertsman’s journey into photography started at a young age when, at just five years old, he began taking pictures of birds with a basic camera owned by his parents. Over the years, his passion for wildlife and photography flourished, and his interest in astronomy during high school led to the idea of combining bird photography with celestial events.

The rare opportunity to capture a bird in front of a total solar eclipse spurred Gertsman’s creativity. He meticulously planned the momentous shot by identifying the ideal location and timing for the eclipse off the West Coast of Mexico. Boarding a boat near Mazatlán on April 8, 2024, he positioned himself to photograph the frigatebirds as they reacted to the darkening sky during the eclipse.

Despite the challenges posed by the bobbing boat, Gertsman’s dedication to his craft paid off as he successfully captured the awe-inspiring moment of frigatebirds flying against the backdrop of the solar eclipse. His unconventional approach to photography and meticulous preparation resulted in a winning shot that earned him the prestigious title of Bird Photographer of the Year.

Gertsman’s victory not only brought him a cash prize but also highlighted the importance of nature conservation through the lens of photography. By showcasing the beauty and significance of birds in ecosystems, Gertsman aims to inspire others to appreciate and protect these vital creatures.
