Vancouver’s park board recently voted to issue an apology to the 2SLGBTQ+ community for its decision to host the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience in Stanley Park in November. This decision has garnered attention from author J.K. Rowling.
In response to a statement by commissioner Tom Digby, where he commended the board for their actions, including the apology and distancing from the author and her views on transgender rights, Rowling expressed her indifference, stating she was not aware of being avowed by Vancouver Parks and Recreation. The discussion arose following a meeting where the park board members deliberated their choice to bring the immersive Harry Potter programming to Stanley Park without full awareness of Rowling’s controversial stance on transgender issues.
Rowling has publicly voiced her belief that biological sex is unchangeable and has raised concerns about self-identification of gender, particularly regarding potential risks to non-transgender women and children. Rob Hadley, a member of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ Advisory Committee, emphasized that Rowling’s viewpoints pose a threat to the rights of transgender individuals and criticized the decision to feature her work in a publicly funded event.
Hadley stressed that the advisory committee is not advocating for a boycott of the Harry Potter series but expressed concerns that any proceeds Rowling receives from Vancouver’s installation could contribute to legal battles related to transgender matters. The decision to showcase Rowling’s work was deemed as conflicting with Vancouver’s values of inclusivity, safety, and respect for all communities.
Ky Sargeant from Qmunity, a prominent organization serving 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in British Columbia, regarded the installation decision as a regression from the city’s efforts outlined in the Transgender, Gender Diverse, Two-Spirit (TGD2S) Action Plan. The commissioners acknowledged the backlash and expressed regret, with their motion emphasizing the park board’s commitment to transgender rights and disavowing Rowling’s political activities. Additionally, the motion ensures that the installation will only be operational for the current season.
