U.S. representatives met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday with the goal of bringing Israel and Hamas back on track with the Gaza ceasefire plan. The recent surge of violence over the weekend put the one-week-old truce at risk, resulting in 45 reported fatalities in Gaza.
Despite the renewed commitment from both Israel and Hamas to the ceasefire plan advocated by U.S. President Donald Trump, maintaining the peace remains a challenge. The ongoing outbreaks of violence cast doubts on the ability of the U.S. to exert pressure on the conflicting parties and sustain the progress towards ending the conflict.
The hurdles in preserving the hard-won ceasefire highlight unresolved issues such as the disarmament of Hamas, Israeli troop withdrawals, and the future governance of Gaza following two years of conflict. Trump emphasized the U.S.’s efforts to uphold the ceasefire, asserting that Hamas needed to act swiftly to comply, although he refrained from instructing Israel to intervene militarily.
The U.S. envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, began their visit on Monday to strengthen the truce and initiate discussions on the subsequent, more complex phase of the 20-step plan. Vice President JD Vance is also scheduled to visit Israel on Tuesday to address regional challenges and opportunities with Netanyahu.
The high-level diplomatic engagement in the region underscores the significance of solidifying the ceasefire for Trump, who recently heralded a “new Middle East era.” The Gaza Health Ministry reported a total of 80 casualties and 303 injuries since the ceasefire deal’s initial phase on October 11.
In parallel, efforts are underway to recover the remains of hostages, with the Red Cross facilitating the return of bodies from Hamas to Israel. Despite challenges, aid convoys are continuing to enter Gaza, although the Rafah border crossing with Egypt remains closed to human traffic.
As discussions progress, Hamas and other factions oppose foreign administration of Gaza as outlined in the Trump plan, complicating the disarmament demands and governance structure. Amid the uncertainty surrounding the truce, Gaza residents express concerns over potential resurgences of violence, underscoring the delicate nature of the situation.
