U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed a forthcoming meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House this Friday. This will mark the first encounter between the Republican president and the democratic socialist victor of the recent mayoral election. Mamdani and Trump have previously exchanged criticisms, with Trump supporting Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo, while Mamdani has been vocal in his disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, particularly in relation to immigration enforcement and U.S. backing of Israel during the Gaza conflict.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Oval Office on November 21st, as announced by Trump on social media earlier this week. Mamdani had communicated through his team to arrange this meeting with the White House, aiming to discuss matters of public safety, economic stability, and the affordability agenda with the President while in Washington.
During the mayoral campaign, Trump had threatened to withhold significant federal funding from New York City if Mamdani emerged victorious. Notably, the U.S. federal government is allocating $7.4 billion US to the city in fiscal year 2026, comprising approximately 6.4% of the city’s total expenditure, according to a report by the New York State Comptroller. Trump has erroneously labeled Mamdani as a “communist” since his ascent, with Mamdani emphasizing the need to counter Trump’s initiatives, particularly regarding immigration, as a key aspect of his successful campaign.
Following his win, Mamdani expressed his intention for New York to set an example in opposing the President, aiming to “Trump-proof” the city upon assuming office in January. Despite the prior tensions, Mamdani has also indicated a willingness to collaborate with any party, including the President, for the betterment of New Yorkers. Mamdani is set to be sworn in as the Mayor of New York City on January 1st.
