Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped under debris inside a historic tower undergoing renovation in Rome. Unfortunately, the rescued worker, identified as Octav Stroici, did not survive his injuries. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep condolences for the tragic loss. Another Romanian worker was safely extracted from the site.

Rescuers faced challenges reaching the trapped worker, employing various methods including a crane and drone. The complex operation lasted for hours, with rescuers carefully removing rubble to free Stroici. The mayor of Rome remarked on the delicate nature of the extraction process to prevent further collapses.

Despite efforts to save Stroici, he passed away in the hospital, leading to an outpouring of condolences from officials and the community. Three workers were rescued without harm, while one worker remained in critical condition. The tower’s collapse, a historical landmark dating back to the 13th century, drew the attention of tourists who witnessed the dramatic rescue efforts.

The tower, closed since 2007, was undergoing an extensive restoration project worth $11.1 million. Prior safety assessments had deemed the structure stable for renovation works. Italian authorities initiated an investigation into the incident for possible negligence charges, a common practice in such cases.
