Thieves wearing balaclavas targeted the Louvre museum in Paris by using a crane to break into an upper window, then absconding with valuable items from an area that showcases the French crown jewels. The incident, which occurred while the museum was open to the public, has raised concerns about security at the renowned institution, which had previously highlighted issues with insufficient investment. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the theft as an assault on the country’s heritage and vowed to recover the stolen works and bring the culprits to justice.
The robbery, conducted by four individuals who brandished angle grinders but were not armed, lasted approximately six to seven minutes. The thieves managed to steal eight out of the nine targeted objects, losing the ninth, the crown of Empress Eugénie, during their escape. The missing jewels include pieces from the sets of Queen Marie-Amélie, Queen Hortense, and Empress Eugénie, among others. Despite the significant value of the stolen items, including the crown of Napoleon III’s wife, experts believe the Regent diamond, worth over $60 million, was surprisingly left untouched.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez revealed that a specialized police unit with a strong track record in solving high-profile thefts has been assigned to the case. While various leads are being pursued, investigators are exploring the possibility of organized crime involvement, either through a commissioned theft or individuals seeking to profit from the stolen jewels. The authorities have ruled out foreign interference as a primary theory.
In response to the incident, the Louvre announced its closure for the day due to “exceptional reasons.” Visitors, including tourists from California, were evacuated from galleries, disrupting their plans to view iconic artworks like the Mona Lisa. The museum, which had previously suffered a notable art theft in 1911, has faced ongoing challenges with security, prompting calls for enhanced protection of its valuable collection and aging infrastructure.
French officials, including Culture Minister Rachida Dati, have underscored the importance of adapting museum security measures to combat modern forms of criminal activity, emphasizing the threat posed by organized crime networks.
