Longueuil authorities have unveiled surveillance footage to aid in identifying a person connected to the recent incident of a newborn left on a doorstep. The Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) shared a video capturing an individual carrying something while strolling down a sidewalk. Jacqueline Pierre, the SPAL spokesperson, highlighted that the individual was apparently holding the baby during the recording and could possess vital information to assist the parents.
The incident occurred on Bourgeoys Street on Sunday around 11 p.m. when someone rang the doorbell of a residence and swiftly departed. Upon investigation, a newborn wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached was discovered by the occupants, who promptly alerted emergency services. The infant received medical attention, is reported to be in good condition, and was hospitalized.
Longueuil police announced their search for the individual responsible for abandoning the baby on Monday. They intend to canvass the neighborhood for potential surveillance footage from residents that could aid in locating the infant’s parents. Jacqueline Pierre urged anyone recognizing the person in the footage to reach out to the authorities.
During a press conference, Pierre expressed empathy towards the parents, acknowledging the challenging circumstances they are likely facing. She emphasized the police’s priority in supporting the parents’ well-being and encouraged them to seek medical assistance. Mélanie Mercille, another SPAL spokesperson, revealed that the baby was born prematurely at 34 weeks. Following public tips, investigators conducted searches in Marguerite Bourgeoys Park, near the site where the infant was found, prompting the park’s closure to the public.
The authorities remain actively involved in the investigation, seeking community cooperation in identifying the individual in the surveillance footage and locating the newborn’s parents.
