A recent study suggests that taking time for enjoyable activities in everyday life can have positive effects. The study, published in the journal Leisure Studies, explores how these moments of leisure occur, their significance, and their impact on individuals.

Lead researcher Karen Gallant, an associate professor at Dalhousie University, emphasized the importance of valuing brief moments of relaxation and joy. The study, conducted in Halifax by researchers from Dalhousie, Brock University, and the University of Waterloo, involved interviewing participants about their experiences with everyday leisure activities.

Participants shared various activities that brought them joy, such as watching the sunrise, taking photos, or engaging in simple tasks like making coffee. Despite the brevity of these moments, individuals reported feeling stress relief and gaining a more positive outlook.

Gallant highlighted that everyday leisure differs from structured activities, as it can occur spontaneously anywhere and at any time. These moments are accessible to everyone, regardless of their daily responsibilities. Participants expressed feelings of joy, connection, and sensory pleasure from these experiences.

The study also examined how these moments of leisure can serve as a way to counter societal pressures of constant productivity. Dr. Rebecca Boehm, a psychologist from Nova Scotia, emphasized the importance of slowing down and staying present to reduce cognitive overload.

Gallant suggested that while cellphones may limit opportunities for spontaneous leisure, they can also facilitate such moments, like playing a quick game or sharing photos. She recommended creating more leisure moments by allowing time for surprises and being prepared for spontaneous activities.

By being open and receptive to these experiences, individuals can enhance their well-being and find meaning in simple everyday pleasures. Prioritizing these moments can offer a sense of self-discovery and connection with the world around them.
