Spotify’s temporary switch from its traditional green-and-black mobile app icon to a flashy 3D disco ball design has sparked backlash among a vocal group of users worldwide. The change, made in honor of the company’s 20th anniversary, has faced sharp criticism online, with many users expressing their displeasure similar to the disdain for pineapple on pizza or the word “moist.”
Critics of the new 3D logo have described it as unattractive and pixelated, with some even calling for the removal of the designer behind it. One user went as far as to say that the change made them consider uninstalling the Spotify app.
Despite the negative feedback, a different faction has defended the new logo and criticized the detractors as “haters,” pointing out a broader trend towards minimalist design. In a show of support, social media managers from other brands have created their disco ball-inspired logos to join the conversation.
In response to concerns about readability and branding, Spotify clarified that the disco ball logo is only temporary. A company spokesperson reassured users that the regular app icon will return after the anniversary celebration ends.
Acknowledging the mixed reactions, Spotify admitted that the glittery logo may not appeal to everyone and assured users that the temporary design makeover will be coming to an end soon.
