“Southwestern Ontario Braces for Frigid Cold Snap”

Health units in the southwestern region of Ontario have announced the initiation of the first cold weather alert for 2025, commencing overnight on Monday due to anticipated frigid temperatures and severe wind chills. Both the Middlesex-London and Southwestern Public Health Units are urging residents to take necessary precautions as wind chill values are projected to plummet to -21°C on Tuesday morning, eventually rising to -16°C later in the day, as stated in a public service announcement.

The Southwestern Public Health Unit, covering areas in Oxford and Elgin Counties along with the City of St. Thomas, mentioned that temperatures will decrease starting from Monday night and persist until Wednesday. Cold weather alerts are issued by health units when Environment Canada predicts temperatures of -15°C or below, wind chills of -20°C or lower, or when a cold alert is declared by the national weather agency.

Environment Canada’s forecast includes a 40% chance of snow flurries accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h. Health units are advising residents to remain indoors in heated spaces whenever possible. Moreover, individuals are encouraged to dress warmly in layers, ensuring all exposed skin is covered to prevent frostbite, which can occur rapidly in extreme cold conditions.

Residents are advised to consume warm fluids while avoiding caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as these substances can expedite heat loss from the body. Engaging in strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided. The Middlesex-London Health Unit emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance if experiencing symptoms of hypothermia or frostbite, including shivering, confusion, slurred speech, and numb or waxy skin.

To provide relief from the cold weather, the City of London has designated various community centers as warming centers. These locations, such as the East Lions Community Centre and the North London Optimist Community Centre, will offer warmth to those in need. Additionally, the London Public Library’s Central branch will serve as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Southwestern Public Health website provides information on warming center locations in Oxford, Elgin Counties, and St. Thomas.
